The small town of Ceret, once frequented by Picasso, Matisse and friends, is in the foothills of the Pyrenees. I stayed there in August 2003 and each afternoon a storm would rise up from the foothills – as if from nowhere forming dark shadows amongst the deep greens of the vegetation and the purple of the mountains. The wind from the sea across the flat plain would then drive the storm back over the hills. This painting is about the moment when the wind would push the storm back and the bright light coming from the distant coast contrasted itself with the shadows cast by the disappearing clouds.

Sono stata là nell’agosto 2003e ogni pomeriggio un temporale scoppiava – come se dal nulla si creassero nere nuvole tra il verde della vegetazione e il rosso porpora delle montagne. Il vento proveniente dal mare, attraverso la pianura, guida la tempesta sopra alle colline. Questo dipinto rappresenta il momento in cui il vento spinge le nuvole via e una luce brillante che arriva dalla costa lontana, contrasta con l’ombra delle nuvole che stanno sparendo.
